Hidden village of the Sea

Far from the bustling city of Mumbai, along the coastal stretch of Thane district, lies Uttan—a small, picturesque town known for its simplicity, hardworking spirit, and warm-hearted people. The residents, known as the 'Kolis,' lead a humble lifestyle that adds to the town's charm. Fishing is their primary occupation, deeply rooted in tradition and community effort.

The journey of fishing begins with the construction of the boats, a process that takes around 5 to 6 months. Once the wooden frame is complete, a motor—built in a nearby workshop—is installed to prepare the vessel for the sea. With everything in place, the voyage begins.

Some fishermen return the same evening with their catch, which is then sorted by the women of the household. The fish are laid out to dry in the sun along the coast. Once dried, they are ready to be sold in the local markets, continuing a cycle that sustains both tradition and livelihood.
